![]() ![]() While Robinett's message in Adventure led to the first use of the phrase "Easter egg", Easter eggs are included in previous video games. Instead, Steve Wright, the Director of Software Development in the Atari Consumer Division, suggested that they keep the message and, in fact, encourage the inclusion of such messages in future games, describing them as Easter eggs for consumers to find. Atari's management initially wanted to remove the message and release the game again, until this was deemed too costly. Shortly after his departure, the "Gray Dot" and his message were discovered by a player. When Robinett left Atari, he did not inform the company of the acknowledgment that he included in the game. Robinett, who disagreed with his supervisor over this lack of acknowledgment, secretly programmed the message "Created by Warren Robinett" to appear only if a player moves their avatar over a specific pixel (dubbed the "Gray Dot") during a certain part of the game and enters a previously "forbidden" part of the map where the message can be found. At the time, Atari did not include programmers' names in the game credits, both to prevent competitors from poaching its developers as well as to deny developers a means to bargain with the management of the new owners, Warner Communications. The use of the term " Easter egg" to describe secret features in video games originates from the 1980 video game Adventure for the Atari 2600 game console, programmed by employee Warren Robinett. See also: Adventure (1980 video game) § Easter egg The secret room in Adventure with Warren Robinett's credit The earliest known Easter egg in software in general is one placed in the "make" command for PDP-6/ PDP-10 computers sometime in October 1967–October 1968, wherein if the user attempts to create a file named "love" by typing "make love", the program responds " not war?" before proceeding. The earliest known video game Easter egg is in the 1973 video game Moonlander, in which the player tries to land a Lunar module on the moon if the player opts to fly the module horizontally through several of the game's screens, they encounter a McDonald's restaurant, and if they land next to it the astronaut will visit it instead of standing next to the ship. The term used in this manner was coined around 1979 by Steve Wright, the then-Director of Software Development in the Atari Consumer Division, to describe a hidden message in the Atari video game Adventure, in reference to an Easter egg hunt. Īn Easter egg is a message, image, or feature hidden in software, a video game, a film, or another - usually electronic - medium. The maximum rate corresponds to the activationless regime with –Δ G 0 = λ, and the inverted region is defined as –Δ G 0 = λ, where λ is the reorganization energy of the reaction. Thus, a plausible explanation for experimentally observed inverted region behavior for PT or PCET is that varying the driving force also impacts other properties of the system, such as the proton donor-acceptor distance.Īccording to standard Marcus theory of nonadiabatic electron transfer (ET), 1 the dependence of the logarithm of the ET rate constant on the driving force Δ G 0 is represented by an inverted parabola. Moreover, this behavior may be observed for PT or PCET if the proton donor-acceptor distance increases as Δ G 0 becomes more negative. This behavior may be observed for PT over a limited range of rates and driving forces if the solvent reorganization energy is low enough to cause observable oscillations. As a result, inverted region behavior is predicted to be experimentally inaccessible for PT and PCET if only the driving force is varied. The driving force dependence of the rate constant is qualitatively different for PT and PCET than for ET because of the high proton vibrational frequency and substantial shift between the reactant and product proton vibrational wavefunctions. The objective of this Letter is to predict the experimental conditions that could lead to observation of inverted region behavior for PT and PCET. This behavior was predicted theoretically for ET but is not well understood for PT and PCET. Inverted region behavior, where the rate constant decreases as the reaction becomes more exoergic (i.e., as Δ G 0 becomes more negative), has been observed experimentally for ET and PT. The driving force dependence of the rate constants for nonadiabatic electron transfer (ET), proton transfer (PT), and proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) reactions are examined. ![]() ![]() I only have to pay $5.60 to bring another family member with me! You can imagine this layout as a sack of marshmallows. Flex layout is capable of adapting to the available space both ways: horizontally and vertically. Today, besides Firefox, all browsers are based on Chrome’s rendering motor: “WebKit” - yes, even MS Edge. Probably this transition has lead to Internet Explorer and Opera browser’s death. “ Flex” and “ Grid” layouts were implemented - first in Chrome and Firefox, later in all browsers. These layouts, however, required a lot of external code and were not as flexible as web designers would wish.įinally, browser makers caught up with designer wishes. Bootstrap, Zurb - they were all based on a “float” layout, implementing a column system, which was able to adapt to smaller screens by specifying different column widths to elements based on screen width. This meant the end of Chameleon skin, for example. Every time you wanted to change a small piece, you had to change the code in several (distant) places and the smallest error had lead to blowing up the whole layout. It was a nightmare to maintain, I can tell. Complex graphics had to be chopped into small pieces. You can imagine this like an Excel table. In the early days of web design, pages were created using the so-called “ table” layout. The most important change was eliminating the previous Zurb framework, and replacing it with vanilla HTML5/CSS3 flex layout. By the time he made his 110 against England, Rogers had already scored 60 hundreds and 20,000 runs in first-class cricket but, until 2013, had always found himself behind others - like Phil Jaques, Simon Katich, Phillip Hughes and Shane Watson - in the Test opening queue. It was a fighting innings in difficult, seaming conditions and suggested that Rogers could play an important role for Australia for some time to come. Their 'new' opener added some much-needed resolve to the batting line-up - and at Chester-le-Street became the second-oldest man to score a maiden Test century for Australia, behind the 37-year-old Arthur Richardson in 1926. ![]() Given his familiarity with English conditions - having played for four first-class counties - and his consistency at the top of Middlesex's order in recent times, picking "Buck" Rogers made perfect sense.ĭespite losing the series, Australia laid good foundations for what was to follow just a few months later. Before the start of that series, Rogers had announced that it would be his last series wearing the baggy green.Life membership of the one-Test club seemed a certainty for Chris Rogers, especially when he came close to losing his Cricket Victoria contract in 2012 with the state keen to look to the future. His partnership (284) with Steven Smith ensured Australia leveled the series 1-1. He also recorded his highest Test score in the second Ashes Test at Lord's in 2015. The opener rated his hundred at the SCG against England as one of his best, he said \"as well as I have ever played.\" He continued to rack up runs at will as he amassed nine fifty plus scores in 11 innings. He was also the leading run-scorer over the two Ashes series. Before scoring his first Test hundred, Rogers had 60 first class centuries and over 20000 first class runs. In the 2013 Ashes, Rogers became the second oldest Australian to score a maiden Test ton when he reached the landmark at Chester-le-Street. Nonetheless, his second home coming was a better one. His first Test was against India in 2008, where he replaced an injured Matthew Hayden and made 4 and 15. Rogers returned to the Test side after a gap of 6 years. Playing for Leicestershire, Rogers scored 56 and 219 versus the touring Aussies. He even had the opportunity to score a double ton against his own country in 2005. Rogers is a regular in the county circuit since 2004 and has represented Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Northamptonshire and Middlesex. His experience of playing county cricket for four different teams came in handy. But when Ricky Ponting and Michael Hussey retired, the selectors wanted some one experienced when Australia toured England for the 2013 Ashes. Rogers had to wait patiently as some of the younger players like - Phil Jaques, Simon Katich, Ed Cowan, Phillip Hughes and even Shane Watson were tried before him to fulfill the opener's slot. He doesn't have the flashy, aggressive or eye-catching game, but his patience, grit and self-confidence makes him stand out.
